Preparing for the NBN
The National Broadband Network (NBN) promises high-speed
national broadband for all Australians. Organisations view
the NBN as an enabler of next-generation services such as
videoconferencing and cloud services to make them more
efficient and provide an enhanced channel to customers.
More than half of organisations surveyed expect to invest in
videoconferencing, cloud applications, storage and backup
as a direct result of the NBN. Nearly half (47%) say the use
of collaboration technologies will increase while nearly
a quarter expect to invest in industry-based applications
such as medical imaging or online learning.
Organisations have high aspirations for the NBN to transform
how they sell to and service customers. Increased productivity
and ability to better service customers were listed by 45% of total
respondents as the greatest benefits, after increased bandwidth
use (70%). Forty percent believe the NBN will give them access
to new technologies and applications.
The research suggests that education and training institutions
appear to be among the biggest supporters of the NBN, nearly
four-fifths saying it will help them provide better services to
customers. Reflecting their research focus, they are also the
most optimistic that the NBN will enable new technologies
and applications, and are keen on its ability to offer new
online learning platforms. Meanwhile, 56% of government
respondents expect the NBN to lift productivity and better
service customers in equal measure.
