NBN to enable new business models.
ANU believes the NBN offers a new
opportunity to connect classrooms
and offer more video content into the
home. The infrastructure and services
strategy provides the basis for service
providers to differentiate. IDC has also
identified other opportunities where
NBN can make a significant difference
in transforming the education sector
in areas such as collaboration and
distance learning.
Consider digital signs and self-
service kiosks for the education
sector.
IDC research has found that
digital signs are making their way
into the education sector. ANU sees
opportunities in using such systems
as well as self-service kiosks to make
higher education more interactive. This
includes offering targeted information
to students and real-time notifications
(e.g. classroom or event changes).
While these technologies can be the
basis for offering students and faculty
differentiated services in education,
they are transferable to other industries.
Cloud for speed and scale.
Legacy
services that are more mature are
ready for cloud environments. There
are also benefits such as consolidating
infrastructure, aggregating resources
and virtualising as much as possible,
which is important for reducing ANU’s
carbon footprint.

“In the old model, IT was the holder of
technology and it was limited largely to a
department. In the new world, students have
brought their own technology and want to
connect and reach a wider audience.”
