We’re all working hard in one way or another, so here’s a few pointers on untangling those knots and relaxing a little.

If stress is left to fester, it can later manifest itself as anxiety, tummy trouble, poor sleeping, weight gain or weight loss - which in turn leads to more stress, which can lead to stronger symptoms.

The good news? Learning some relaxation techniques and taking a few simple steps can help pretty much anyone take the pressure down at home, school, work, or when they’re working from home.

Read our few quick tips to help you relax and nip it in the bud early.

Control your breathing

Deep and slow breathing can slow your heartbeat and lower your blood pressure. It is a powerful tools to control your stress, and it works almost straight away.

Try sitting straight and breathing in slowly through your nose, with your belly rising and without your shoulders moving.

Breathe out slowly until you have no more air, either through your nose, silently, or through your mouth with a shushing sound. Try this exercise for around 5 minutes.

Use this technique when you need to vent some frustration – it’s certainly more constructive than throwing the remote control (especially when the football’s on.)

Cultivate the human touch

Oxytocin, AKA the “love hormone”, is a natural anti-stress and feel-good hormone. It’s released when you spend good time with your friends or family, or even when you bond with strangers and animals.

Cuddle your kids or pet your dog. Fish for some compliments by dishing a few out yourself. Book a massage. Smile, even to passer-by’s in the street. Watch funny videos and laugh out loud. These simple tips will all boost your oxytocin levels.

Keep physically active

Regular moderate exercise is great to reduce tension, improve mood and sleep quality. It causes the body to secrete endorphins and can blunt the stress-response. Even slow movements such as walking, yoga or tai-chi can help you unwind.

Walk, cycle or jog to work or to the shops if you can. If you are sedentary, stand up and stretch every hour. Arrange for walking meetings at work. Schedule time to exercise every other day and make the most of your weekends: play tennis, golf or soccer, mow the lawn or weed the garden.

Don’t let tension rule you

These relaxation techniques are all easy to squeeze into your day and can make a big difference. So, start practicing today to free your mind.
