In cyber space, everyone can hear you scream: Optus showcases the future of remote working with virtual meeting rooms

Video conference calls - the new normal in the remote home worker’s day, with colleagues staring at one another’s ‘boxed’ faces on a computer screen.

Now, visualise a meeting where you can ‘virtually’ sit next to your colleague from across the country, you can high-five them, collaborate on the same whiteboard, walk around the room, hold a 3D model of the company’s latest product while shrinking and expanding it with your hands, walk down a streetscape together and point out changes to make to the layout, share files instantaneously and stream multiple videos simultaneously. Optus 5G has brought this to life with technology innovator  Spatial to showcase how 5G is taking the virtual workplace to another level.

Using a VR headset and run over the Optus 5G network, today’s showcase at the flagship Optus store on George Street, Sydney demonstrated how 5G can power the future of virtual meetings and real time multi-immersive digital collaboration – bringing human connection to remote working.

“I think every person who has worked from home and been part of remote meetings understands the frustrations associated with trying to collaborate remotely,” said Harvey Wright, Optus Head of 5G. “It can be difficult to feel connected to your colleagues as you stare at their 2D image on a computer screen.”

“Today’s showcase has highlighted the future potential of remote meetings and an advance on current collaboration tools – one that makes it feel like your colleagues are right there with you. The fast speed and high bandwidth of 5G creates the ecosystem for large size file sharing and high definition multi streaming capacity in real time, without the dreaded wait while files download. The ability to share multiple videos, presentations and ‘touch’ 3D models in real-time creates an office like environment – as if you were all in the same space together.”

Demonstrated today was a virtually designed meeting room with four high definition videos streaming concurrently, immersive 3D models and real time note sharing.

“This showcase, depicting next generation collaboration has exciting implications for mid to large organizations with a geographically dispersed workforce. This is made possible through the power of the Optus 5G network,” added Mr Wright.

Optus currently has more than 900 5G sites in Australia with more rolling out each month.

More than 420,000 households in Australia can now access Optus 5G Home Internet as Optus continues to accelerate its 5G deployment.
