Optus switches on new mobile towers in Mackay and Bowen Basin

23 April 2019

Optus today announced it will continue to improve mobile coverage in Mackay and the Bowen Basin after switching on four new mobile towers.

The new towers will address known black spots identified by the local community, providing residents and visitors with dedicated 4G mobile coverage to make and receive calls, texts and access mobile data for the first time.

Optus’ Territory General Manager for Central Queensland, Madonna Burgess said, “over the past few months Optus has switched on news towers in the Mackay region at Calen and Mirani along with two new towers in the Bowen Basin at Elphinstone and Glenden.

“The new sites in Calen and Mirani will not only provide dedicated mobile coverage for those in each town, but also improve mobile reception for those who travel along the Bruce Highway and Mackay Eungella Road every day.”

“The new sites in Elphinstone and Glenden will provide dedicated mobile coverage for residents living and travelling around these areas whilst improving the mobile network at the Newlands, Hail Creek, Burton and Byerwen mine sites.”

“We understand the importance for destinations like Mackay and the Bowen Basin to have reliable mobile reception and we’re committed to providing great coverage, choice and value to our customers across the region,” Ms Burgess added.

“Optus is continuing to invest in its mobile network across the Central Queensland region, and it’s great to know that our customers are continuing to see an improving mobile network.”

“We welcome anyone looking for a new mobile phone plan or an awesome value broadband internet, home phone or TV entertainment package to come down to the Optus stores in Mackay at Mt Pleasant Centre or Canelands Central and have a chat to the team.”

Optus continues to invest in its network to improve coverage, reliability and speed across its Australian mobile network. The Optus mobile network possesses a unique mix of technology partners, global alliances and expansive spectrum holdings that position it as a leader in the Australian telecoms landscape.
