STRONGER MOBILE COVERAGE SET FOR TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL

6 September 2018

Optus plans $14 million network investment across North Queensland.

Optus has today announced that staff and visitors to Townsville Hospital will now enjoy improved mobile coverage when visiting the hospital especially on the ground floor.

Optus has completed an In-Building-Coverage (IBC) solution for parts of the Hospital, which addresses internal blackspots identified by the hospital and the Townsville community.

Optus’ North Queensland Territory General Manager, Dave Morrissey said, “The In-Building-Coverage will now allow customers to access the Optus network when they’re inside parts of the hospital.”

“Buildings with unique internal spaces, such as hospitals, can at times be difficult to provide mobile coverage in due to the amount of rooms, hallways and equipment in the building,” said Mr Morrissey.

Optus worked with the Townsville Hospital to identify key internal blackspots, providing both staff and visitors fast and reliable mobile coverage to make and receive calls, texts and access mobile data.

In the past 12-months Optus has invested more than $12 million across North Queensland, improving coverage in Townsville with new towers at Annandale North, Thuringowa Central, Bohle and Rangewood.

This financial year, Optus has plans to invest $14 million in its mobile network across the North Queensland region, working with local communities to improve mobile coverage in their local area.

“Optus is continuing to invest in its mobile network across the North Queensland region and it’s great that our customers are continuing to see an improving Optus network,” Mr Morrissey added.

“We’re committed to providing great coverage to our customers in and around the Townsville region with plans to build new sites in Nome, Black River and Alice River.”

The Optus network handles over 45 million calls and 80 million SMS messages each day and carries 6,000 terabytes of data each week. Optus is continuing to expand and strengthen its network to deliver improved data and voice services across metropolitan, regional and remote locations nationally.
