OPTUS COMMITS MORE THAN $6 MILLION TO IMPROVE MOBILE COVERAGE IN WIDE BAY REGION

17 May 2017

Optus today announced a $6.2 million commitment to improve the 4G Plus mobile network in the Wide Bay region.

Optus’ State Manager for Queensland, Mark O’Shea said, “Optus will build several new sites to improve mobile coverage and customer experience across the region for residents, businesses and visitors.”

“Optus is committed to improving the network and providing faster internet download speeds for people living, working, and visiting Hervey Bay, Maryborough and Fraser Island.”

“We’ve received feedback from customers and businesses that they want better coverage especially along the Bruce Highway and on Fraser Island. We’re working  with local councils, community groups and Government to determine the best location for sites. Some of the new sites will be co-located on current infrastructure.”

In the next two years Optus will build 11 new sites in areas including Federation Park Maryborough, Hervey Bay Esplanade, Maryborough East, Wondunna, Booral, Pig Creek, Aldershot and Kingfisher Bay.

This investment will provide better indoor and outdoor coverage and fewer call drop outs along key transport links including the Bruce Highway and Maryborough Hervey Bay Road.

Optus recently upgraded seven sites at Point Vernon, Eli Water, Torbanlea, Howard, Susan River, Maryborough TAFE and Poona.

The Optus network handles over 45 million calls and 80 million SMS messages each day and carries 6,000 terabytes of data each week. The growing demand for mobile coverage is why Optus is continuously raising the bar when it comes to improving mobile services in regional Australia.

The Wide Bay region is enjoying the benefits of Optus’ superfast 4G Plus network, which now reaches 95.9% of Australians.
