OPTUS COMMITS $3.9 MILLION TO IMPROVE MOBILE COVERAGE IN ARMIDALE AND THE NEW ENGLAND DISTRICT

9 March 2017

Optus today announced a further $1.7 million future investment to improve mobile coverage in Armidale and the New England District in NSW.

Over the next two years, Optus will build four new mobile sites in Armidale East, Tenterfield, Elsmore and Inverell. These new sites will deliver improved 3G and 4G mobile services for Optus customers in these areas, including along Waterfall Way and Gwydir Highway.

Optus Network Manager Vin Mullins said, “We understand the need for better mobile coverage and faster mobile internet download speeds for people living, working, and visiting Armidale and the New England District.”

Over the past twelve months, Optus has already invested $2.2 million in the area which includes the construction of two new mobile towers in Armidale North and central Glen Innes.

Optus has also delivered upgrades to twelve sites in Uralla, Sidling Hill, Blacklands, Walcha, Ebor, Invergowrie, Kellys Plain, Deepwater, Tenterfield, Willawong, Hogues Mountain and Bundarra, to deliver 4G mobile services to customers in the local communities.

“Optus has long recognised the importance of reliable mobile coverage in regional areas and is continuing to invest in our mobile network to support our customers in these communities. Today’s announcement ensures Optus will continue to invest and improve mobile services in Armidale and towns across the New England District, and deliver more choice and competition to these communities,” said Mr Mullins.

Armidale is just one of the hundreds of regional areas enjoying the benefits of Optus’ superfast 4G Plus network, which now reaches 95.9% of Australians.

The Optus mobile network handles over 50 million calls, 65 million SMS messages and carries 600 terabytes of data every day. This growing demand for mobile services is why Optus is continuously investing to improve mobile coverage in regional Australia.
