As Shepparton welcomes the NBN, Optus research reveals the demand for unlimited broadband data is at an all-time high.

The average household in regional Victoria now owns 6.8* internet enabled devices, with 68% stating they use their home broadband more than ever before.

On a typical evening, one in four (28%) households in regional Victoria have three or more people using the home broadband at the same time and half (49%) are using the internet to enjoy entertainment streaming services like Netflix.

Using the household’s entire data allowance is a growing worry for many families, with 36% of regional and 47% of metropolitan-based residents concerned about chewing through their broadband data allowance before the end of the month.

Having sufficient data is a universal need, with 89% of home broadband customers wanting the security of a broadband plan that gives them sufficient data to do whatever they want.

• Regional Victorians spend an average of three hours and 4 minutes online each day. That’s equivalent to almost 50 days a year.

• Monday and Tuesday evenings are the most popular nights for internet bingeing.*

• At least nine in ten households regularly use their home broadband to read and send emails (99%) browse (98%); and shop (91%).

• 64% of households in regional Victoria prefer to watch content via the internet rather than sit down in front of the telly.

Rules of engagement

Home broadband is such an integral part of the modern home, that families are developing their own codes of conduct to navigate their family’s growing demand for data:

• 69% of parents confiscate their children’s devices whilst eating dinner

• 41% have an internet curfew at home

• 10% of families even have a roster for home internet use

The research was conducted by Lonergan research among Australian home internet users aged 18 and above. Fieldwork took place between 12 and 14 May via an online permission based panel.
