MACKAY URGED TO CAPITALISE ON THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION

Chamber of Commerce predicts opportunities for locals from the NBN.

A digital revolution is underway in the form of the National Broadband Network (NBN) and with it comes far-reaching benefits that will transform the lives of residents and businesses in Mackay.

The NBN is the nation’s new high-speed network for broadband internet services, offering faster connections and enabling Australians to be more efficient in everything they do.

Much like the move from analogue to digital TV, the old network will be switched off once the new NBN cables are in place, with the exception of some fixed wireless regions. Residents and businesses need to get connected to the NBN if they require a landline phone or broadband internet.

The switch off happens around 18 months after the NBN arrives in an area and for parts of Mackay, that could be as soon as the end of the month.

Nicki Zurvas, Optus’ NBN expert from the Mackay store explained that while most locals have heard of the NBN, they’re still unsure exactly what it will mean for them.

“The NBN means homes and businesses in Mackay can get more out of their broadband by tapping into the benefits that come with living and working in a more connected world.”

“The NBN will mean faster upload and download speeds, a more reliable and consistent connection and a better streaming experience without the frustrations of buffering,” Ms Zurvas said.

Experts predict tangible benefits for Mackay from the NBN

Kylie Porter, Deputy President, Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce, said the NBN will have a major impact on businesses in the region.

“Business success and technology are inevitably linked, and the arrival of the NBN in Mackay will be good for the local economy. The network will allow more flexible working arrangements, for example through better video conferencing capabilities. It will also enable businesses to strengthen their online offering, create a better customer experience and access new markets.”

“These business benefits will flow through to the broader Mackay community. Deloitte Access Economics estimates that by 2020, households will save up to $3,800 a year as a result of the NBN.”*

  • Technical Support; NBN Co looks after connecting your property to the network. Once you’ve selected the plan that’s right for you, Optus can help you book an appointment with an NBN technician to install all the necessary hardware
  • For renters; NBN Co will need to put a connection box inside your home. Optus recommends you contact your landlord and agree the best location for the equipment
  • Plan ahead; consider the best time for a technician to visit to install the hardware – someone will need to be at home.
