OPTUS BOOSTS 4G IN CANBERRA AND IMPROVES INDOOR COVERAGE
Capitalises on early access 4G 700MHz licences in ACT.
Optus has boosted superfast 4G coverage in the Australian Capital Territory after receiving early access commercial licence approval for 700MHz spectrum from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The ACMA licence has paved the way for Optus to expand and upgrade its existing superfast 4G network across Canberra with 700MHz spectrum, bringing 4G to more places and improving the data experience indoors.
Optus 4G services in Canberra have previously been provided by 2300MHz spectrum only.
Vic McClelland, Managing Director of Networks at Optus said, “This is great news for consumers, Government and business in the ACT. Our new spectrum will offer improved indoor 4G coverage and expand our existing 4G services.”
Optus 4G 700MHz is live across more than 20 sites across Canberra with further plans to continue expanding 4G coverage in Canberra using 700MHz.
Optus is currently undertaking a roll-out of 4G 700 MHz services across Australia to drive further competition and choice for consumers in regional, and strengthen 4G coverage in metropolitan areas. Canberra joins Darwin and Perth CBD as the latest capital city to benefit from Optus’ stronger 4G network.
“Our aim is to deliver 4G services to more than 200 regional and holiday destinations by April 2015, taking our population coverage to 90 per cent of Australian population,” Mr McClelland said.
“With Optus 4G, customers with compatible devices will be able to enjoy a faster and more reliable mobile internet experience and can download, upload and stream music, pictures and videos at superfast speeds.”
Optus customers with compatible 4G 700MHz devices such as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3, Sony Xperia Z3 and HTC One (M8) will be able to access expanding Optus 4G network. A range of other 4G 700MHz devices are also available through Optus.
To enjoy 4G wherever the Optus 4G network expands, customers should look out for compatible 700 MHz devices with the “4G in more places” symbol online and in-store.
From January 2015, as the 700MHz spectrum becomes nationally available for commercial use, Optus will continue to expand its 4G network.
