Optus announced today that the newest addition to its satellite fleet, Optus 10, has successfully completed its orbit raising and has been positioned at a temporary test location on the geostationary arc to enable the testing of the satellite payload to commence.
In the hours following the launch of the Optus 10 Satellite on 12 September 2014 (AEST), Optus’ Belrose satellite facility established communications with the satellite, allowing them to track and control Optus 10 during its ascent.
Paul Sheridan, Vice President of Optus Satellite said, “Successfully launching satellites is a complex and precise business, but it’s something Optus has been doing for almost 30 years.”
“Our experienced team of satellite experts has worked closely with the satellite manufacturer Space Systems/Loral to undertake preliminary deployments and tests prior to reaching the geostationary orbit where it will complete rigorous testing to ensure all on-board equipment is fully operational. We expect this process to be completed by mid-October.”
“Once testing is complete, the team will relocate Optus 10 to its operational location at 164 degrees east.”
Mr Sheridan added, “Optus continues to show its commitment to keeping Australia and New Zealand at the forefront of satellite technology with the launch of Optus 10. We remain the only Australian company to own and operate a satellite fleet.”
The Optus satellite business provides critical support to organisations including emergency services, mining and agriculture industries. Optus satellites also deliver subscription TV, free-to-air TV, radio, internet, voice and data services throughout Australia and New Zealand, and parts of the McMurdo Sound in the Antarctic.
