OPTUS GRANT HELPS WYONG'S YOUNG MUMS STAY ON THE RIGHT TRACK

Optus funding has enabled Wyong’s Northlakes Community Services to extend its Bump program, which supports young disadvantaged local mums to overcome issues, complete their education and find employment.

Supported with funding of $10,000 from this year’s Optus Community Grants program, Northlakes Community Services was able to provide a program councillor and materials for the 1:1 mentoring sessions and monthly workshops included in its Bump program.

The Bump program supports young mums under the age of 23, who may come from disadvantaged social or economic backgrounds to complete their secondary education and address issues, such as domestic violence and low self-esteem, which may be holding them back from finding employment.

Jennie McGhie, Northlakes Community Services supervisor said, “The Optus Community Grant has made it possible for us to reach out to more young mums in Wyong who need help to complete their schooling and find employment. A lot of the women we work with come from difficult domestic or economic situations so need a supportive and caring environment to help them realise their potential”.

The annual Optus Community Grants program awards funding of up to $10,000 to not-for-profit organisations that provide a range of support services to its surrounding community. Over the past five years, Optus has donated almost $1.2 million to more than 200 community organisations across Australia.
