Aussie pop sensation helps volunteers build a ‘Street Studio’ for disadvantaged Sydney youth
Aussie sweetheart and pop icon Samantha Jade officially launched Optus RockCorps 2014 today, the global movement that rewards four hours of volunteer work with money can’t buy tickets to see exclusive, live concerts with some of the world’s biggest music acts.
Optus’ flagship volunteering initiative is this year presented by Nokia, with the Optus RockCorps concert being held at Luna Park on March 12 and is set to attract some of the biggest and most well-loved names in the music business. Today we revealed the first exciting act and official Optus RockCorps ambassador, Samantha Jade!
Transforming the Street Studio
To celebrate the launch Samantha Jade rolled up her sleeves to help 40 volunteers create a unique recording facility at Radio SkidRow based in Marrickville, named the Street Studio. Armed with a paint brush instead of a microphone, the songstress helped volunteers makeover the entire radio station which offers disadvantaged youth recording support and broadcasting opportunities.
To officially unveil the new decked out Street Studio with the latest and greatest recording equipment, Samantha Jade paired up with SkidRow presenter, MC and hip-hop artist Kween G, to sound check the equipment and treat volunteers to a short duet.
Samantha Jade said, “Music connects so many people so it only feels natural to use it as an opportunity to encourage young people to come together and volunteer in their local communities. By giving up just a few hours of time for a great cause like Optus RockCorps, people can make a real difference to their community and get money can’t buy tickets to an amazing concert.”
Kween G added, “This radio station helped me turn my life around over a decade ago and since then I’ve had the opportunity to learn new skills in the broadcast industry. Thanks to the Optus RockCorps initiative the new Street Studio built by the volunteers will provide a creative outlet for local youth, allowing us to run training programs to skill them up in something they are passionate about.”
Optus RockCorps in 2014
Now in its second year in Australia, Optus RockCorps 2014 is expected to deliver 12,000 volunteer hours at over 40 volunteer projects across Sydney.
The Australian program kicked off in 2013 with volunteers working to secure a ticket to see The Script, Tinie Tempah, Guy Sebastian and The Potbelleez.
Nathan Rosenberg, Head of Brand at Optus said, “Optus RockCorps gives everyone the chance to get involved in volunteering to make a real difference in their communities. The mantra of Optus RockCorps is Give, Get Given and so all we ask is for people to consider giving up four hours of their time, in return for an awesome concert ticket.”
Stephen Greene, CEO of RockCorps added, “We are really excited to be launching the 2014 Optus RockCorps programme today. Last year was fantastic with 5,000 youth volunteering to see an amazing gig and we know this year at Luna Park is going to be even better. We are working with some brilliant community organisations and can’t wait to see people down at the volunteer projects, giving their time to earn a ticket to this exclusive event.”
