Better indoor coverage and overall 3G experience in Wollongong – from Stanwell Park to Kiama
Optus has just completed a series of extensive 3G network upgrades to select sites in the greater Illawarra region. These upgrades bring better indoor coverage and improved overall 3G experience to Optus customers from Stanwell Park down to the beaches of Kiama.
Vic McClelland, Managing Director of Networks at Optus, said, “We began work on Wollongong earlier this year by switching on our superfast 4G network, which has given customers a real boost in data speeds. These upgrades to our 3G network are also important, especially for delivering stronger reception in our customers’ homes and offices.”
Since the upgrade, Optus network and customer experience teams have analysed network performance data, and crowd sourced usage info collected from over 3,300 Wollongong customers with 3G phones and tablets. This was done via the Optus Now app. The app crowd sources info such as signal strength and network activity from customers, helping Optus understand customers’ actual network experience while they’re at home or on the run.
The data from Wollongong shows an immediate improvement in customer experience, with more time spent connected to 3G, and less falling back onto 2G, for both voice and data connections.
“Customers in upgraded areas of Wollongong are now getting a much more consistent experience whether they’re indoors or out and about. They’re enjoying superfast 4G speeds in areas that are now live, and they’ve got a much more reliable 3G network they can depend on whether they’re at work or at home,” Mr McClelland added.
“Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue fine-tuning the network to optimise the 3G experience, while progressing with the expansion of our 4G network through the addition of new mobile sites.”
In 2014, Optus will also be progressively switching on over 20 new mobile sites in the Illawarra area to deliver an even better experience for customers.
The Optus mobile network now reaches 98.5 per cent of the Australian population, and connects around 9.5 million mobile customers.
