OPTUS RECOGNISED FOR EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION AND SATELLITE SERVICES

Consumer CEO for the SingTel Group and former Optus CEO Consumer Paul O’Sullivan awarded Communications Ambassador 2013

Last night the communications industry acknowledged Consumer CEO for the SingTel Group and former Optus CEO, Paul O’Sullivan for his leadership and advocacy, while Optus won two major awards at the 2013 ACOMM Awards, jointly presented by the Communications Alliance and Communications Day.

The seventh Annual ACOMM Awards was a sold out event that acknowledged excellence among communications industry participants, including service providers, content providers, carriers and technology partners.

Paul O’Sullivan, CEO Group Consumer SingTel, received the Communications Ambassador award for his passionate advocacy and significant contribution to the Australian communications industry. The award acknowledged Paul’s pivotal role in championing competition and advocating for the voice of the consumer.

Optus was also recognised for its significant contribution and excellence in Community Contribution and Satellite Services.

In the Community

As the primary mobile telecommunications provider through the Queensland and Northern New South Wales floods, Optus won the award for Community Contribution by helping local communities that were severely impacted by the extreme weather events. Optus’ response to the disaster was twofold, delivering critical network support to communities during the initial crisis period and providing on-the-ground support to aid agencies to help with recovery efforts.

Glenn Lukey, Acting Managing Director of Optus Networks, said, “We are proud to be part of the Optus Networks team that worked night and day over the Australia Day long weekend to ensure affected areas of Queensland received mobile and broadband services at such a critical time. This award acknowledges both the tireless efforts of the individual employees who delivered hundreds of prepaid mobile phones to emergency services as well as the unique satellite capabilities that enabled Queensland ambulances to provide vital services in the area.”

In the Sky

Optus also took out the gong for Satellite Provider of the Year for the company’s commitment to providing satellite products and services in remote areas of the country, including:

• First Release Satellite Service (FRSS), a wholesale broadband access service for the National Broadband Network (NBN Co),
• Optus SatZone, which delivers 3G mobile connectivity to remote locations, and;
• Aurora Digital, Optus’ state of the art satellite broadcast distribution platform that delivers satellite broadcast television and radio services to regional and remote Australia.

Paul Sheridan, Vice President of Optus Satellite, said, “As the only telecommunications company to own and operate satellites in Australia, we’re proud to play a part in uniting communities by enabling high speed broadband access, mobile and broadcast services for everyone. In a country as large and diverse as Australia, satellite continues to be a critical component of communications infrastructure.”
