From today, Sydney rail commuters will be able to make calls, send SMS, update social networks and browse the internet all the way around the City Circle. Optus switched on expanded network coverage through the Circle’s underground tunnels overnight, ready for Monday morning’s trip to work.
“Sydneysiders travelling on one of the city’s busiest train lines can access Optus 2G, 3G and 4G coverage on the platform and throughout the tunnels, making the daily commute more entertaining and productive.
Whether you’re catching up on work emails, making a phone call or watching your favourite TV show on your 4G phone or tablet, you’ll now have continuous coverage along the City Circle,” David Epstein, Vice President of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs, said.
In partnership with the NSW Government and RailCorp, Optus was the lead mobile carrier for the July 2012 launch of Sydney’s first rail tunnel mobile coverage on the CBD North and Western Rail line tunnel, and the North Sydney and Chatswood tunnels.
Today’s announcement sees Phase II of the project complete, with continuous mobile coverage on the City Circle line – on platforms and in the tunnels at Central, Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay, St James and Museum.
“With new coverage in the City Circle tunnels, Sydney’s train travellers can enjoy their daily commute and get more out of their trip, and we continue to work towards helping Optus customers stay connected anywhere, on any device,” Mr Epstein said.
