An Optus spokesperson said:
As of 6am today (28/1/13) there has been some impact to the Optus network in the flood affected areas of Queensland.
Where possible, we are deploying backup generators in some locations throughout the flood affected areas to allow us to respond to power outages.
Central and North QLD
The Optus 3G mobile network is operating in the major population centres of Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay, Gladstone, Bundaberg and Gympie – with voice & data services available on 2G and 3G.
Optus is currently providing primary mobile coverage in a number of these major population areas due to outages affecting other providers. We are currently sourcing more generators in an effort to ensure we can restore mobile coverage to as many mobile sites as possible.
Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich and Toowoomba
In Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich and Toowoomba, there has currently been minimal impact to Optus mobile infrastructure with 3G and 2G voice and data.
Due to power outages there is some disruption to Optus cable broadband customers in the Brisbane metropolitan area.
We continue to monitor the situation closely. Should customers need to contact emergency services in the event of an Optus mobile service disruption, we encourage customers to call 000 from their mobile to be switched to the nearest available mobile network.
