As of 2pm Monday afternoon (28/1/2013), the Optus network continues to be the main mobile network operating from Rockhampton to Cairns with mobile and fixed broadband services currently available in the major population centres of Central and North Queensland.
3G and 2G mobile coverage is available in Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay, Gladstone, Bundaberg and Gympie. Optus is currently providing the primary mobile coverage in a number of these major population areas due to outages affecting other providers.
However, there are scattered mobile outages across Central and South East QLD regions to varying degrees including Mt Isa, Longreach, Emerald, Dalby, Tin Can Bay, and Rainbow Beach.
The Optus Mobile network in Bundaberg is currently operating normally with the Optus network team monitoring the area as priority due to the current flood situation.
We continue to monitor the situation closely. Should customers need to contact emergency services in the event of an Optus mobile service disruption, we encourage customers to call 000 from their mobile to be switched to the nearest available mobile network.
A number of priority sites for restoration have been passed to Energex and Ergon for assistance in restoring power.
Where possible, we have deployed backup generators in accessible locations throughout the flood affected areas to allow us to respond to power outages.
In South East QLD there are some disruptions to individual mobile sites in Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Toowoomba due to power outages. However, overlapping coverage from surrounding mobile sites should ensure a continuation of services in the vast majority of areas.
There are disruptions to Optus fixed voice and broadband customers in Brisbane and Ipswich areas due to power outages with the main suburbs affected including Tarragindi, Mansfield, Redcliffe, Wavell Heights, Indooroopilly, Windsor, Wynnum, Holland, Rochedale South, Regents Park, Loganholme and Toowong.
Optus is using Facebook and twitter as its primary communication channel for updating network status. Please refer to Facebook (facebook.com/Optus) and Twitter (twitter.com/Optus) for the latest information. Our next update will be available on these channels at 5pm QLD time.
Notes to editor: We are currently distributing mobile phones to emergency services across these major centres. Should any media outlet require an emergency prepaid Optus phone, please contact the Optus media line or if you can only make local calls please contact your nearest Optus store.
