Optus today announces the official launch of its 4G network in Melbourne, providing customers with the enhanced experience and speed that the Optus 4G network has to offer. Whether that’s streaming videos from YouTube or Vimeo, downloading songs from iTunes or uploading photos onto Facebook, customers can enjoy faster upload and download speeds in Optus 4G coverage areas. Today’s launch in Melbourne follows Optus’ initial switch on of 4G in April in the Greater Newcastle region, as well as turning on 4G in Sydney and Perth earlier this month.
To bolster its existing 3G network, Optus has also rolled out a large scale 3G enhancement programme across more than 700 mobile sites in metropolitan Melbourne. Customers with 4G or 3G dual-band devices will now be able to experience better indoor mobile coverage and more consistent data connectivity.
Optus 4G – it’s here
“We are excited about the launch of Optus 4G and the expansion of our 3G enhancement programme across Melbourne,” said Günther Ottendorfer, Managing Director of Networks at Optus. “Our customers have told us what matters most to them, and we have listened to their feedback to deliver a mobile network that will provide quicker data speeds, better call quality and improved in-building coverage in more areas – so they can stay in touch and do more.”
The Optus 4G network has the largest 4G footprint in the Melbourne metropolitan area, stretching approximately 10km from the CBD – from Mt Waverly in the east to St Albans in the west, and from Hampton in the south to Campbellfield in the north.
Optus customers can experience the 4G network with the Samsung GALAXY S III 4G available on pre-order as well as other 4G compatible smartphones coming soon, and also enjoy faster mobile broadband with the Optus 4G USB modem or portable Wi-Fi modem, which can wirelessly connect up to 5 devices.
Stronger 3G than ever before
The expanded Optus 3G network now covers 99 per cent of the Victorian population. To deliver even better network consistency, 3G data speeds and broader coverage for Victorian customers, Optus will roll out more than 150 additional mobile sites across the state within the next two years.
