OPTUS CALLS ON COMMUNITIES WITH 2012 GRANTS PROGRAM

1 August 2012

Optus is calling on local community and non-profit organisations, who support disengaged youth and build social inclusion, to apply for its 2012 ‘yes’ Optus Community Grants program which is now open.

Now in its fifth year, this year’s program is giving communities across Australia access to greater funding by doubling the maximum grant allowance from $5,000 to up to $10,000 per successful applicant, with Optus offering a total of up to $230,000 in funding.

Helen Maisano, Manager, Optus Corporate Social Responsibility said, “Optus is committed to supporting local communities and we are proud to be increasing our investment this year to help them make a significant contribution to society.

“Successful applicants in the past have initiated programs such as providing access to communications, building new and strong support networks, improving educational outcomes, building skills and confidence and removing barriers to empowerment.

“Last year, Yipirinya School in Central Australia was awarded $5,000 to empower disengaged indigenous children by integrating a smart board to improve their bilingual and bilateral education. This is a fantastic example of how communities can use the funding to make a positive social impact for society,” Ms Maisano said.

Ken Langford-Smith, Principal, Yipirinya School said, “The 2011 ‘yes’ Optus Community Grants funding has enabled the smart board to become an invaluable teaching asset. The students now have more opportunities to see, hear and interact with lesson materials allowing them to be more engaged and motivated in the class room.”

Optus awarded 32 grants in 2011. Since launching the ‘yes’ Optus Community Grants program in 2008, Optus has awarded $550,000 worth of funding to 117 organisations.

Applications can only be submitted online at www.optus.com.au/grants and must be received by Friday 31 August 2012.
