OPTUS SERVES UP NEW DIGITAL APPS AND WI-FI AT AUSTRALIA OPEN 2012

For the first time, Optus, in conjunction with Tennis Australia, will provide free internet connectivity for Wi-Fi users across the entire Australian Open site for thousands of tennis fans to access throughout the tournament

Customers on any network will be able to access the latest news, connect with friends, download and experience applications and online services, at no cost*, throughout Melbourne Park during the two-week event in January.

Jann Kohlman, Group Manager of Optus Sponsorship and Community Programs, said “At this year’s Australian Open, we are dedicated to delivering seamless connectivity and innovation to tennis fans for the duration of the tournament.

“As the exclusive telecommunications partner for the eighth year running, free Wi-Fi on the ground, dedicated digital applications and live streaming will allow people around Australia to embrace all that Australia’s most high profile sporting event has to offer,” said Ms Kohlman.

Optus has invested $3 million in Network infrastructure in the past 12 to 18 months to boost network capacity in areas surrounding the Melbourne Park precinct.

For the second year, Optus will offer its customers exclusive live streaming** of Seven’s coverage via a unique TV and Video app, ensuring they won’t have to miss another ace or winner on their 3G compatible mobile.

In 2011, many Optus customers took advantage of the Australian Open mobile streaming service, spending on average 6.50 minutes during each visit.

In addition to free Wi-Fi and exclusive live streaming, Optus will also enhance the popular Go Places app, and deliver a dedicated Melbourne restaurant guide with specific deals, available to purchase for the duration of the tournament. A new widget has been developed to provide customers access to get great deals, reviews and ratings of nearby Melbourne restaurants, ensuring an enjoyable dining experience to round off a day at the tennis.

As the official Telecommunications Partner for the Australian Open for the eighth consecutive year, Optus is enabling Tennis Australia to communicate to billions of tennis fans globally throughout the two week tournament which runs from 16 to 29 January 2012.
