OPTUS BRINGS CUSTOMERS 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP MATCHES LIVE TO THEIR 3G MOBILE FOR FREE

3 December 2009

Optus announced today it will be the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Mobile Broadcaster in Australia.

Optus customers will have access to:

  • Free, live streaming of 2010 FIFA World Cup™ matches - optimised for the 3G mobile*
  • 500 FIFA archived video on demand clips
  • FIFA wallpapers, screensavers and ringtones
  • Match scores, news, statistics and highlight clips
  • Over 200 hours of World Cup™ action and footage

"As the FIFA 2010 World Cup™ Mobile Broadcaster in Australia, Optus will deliver live streaming exclusively to Optus 3G mobile customers for free via a dedicated camera which is filmed specifically for the mobile," Mr Paul O'Sullivan, Optus Chief Executive said.

"Optus customers will feel like they are match-side in South Africa watching the games live on their mobile phone while they are out and about. By bringing the world's largest sporting event to our customers for free and live in the palm of their hands we hope to build a greater football fan base in Australia.

"As the official telecommunications partner of Football Federation Australia, we already support the football community from a grass roots level through to the Australian National Team," Mr O'Sullivan said.

"It's great for the game and the Socceroos that Optus mobile customers will be able to watch all the action live from South Africa on their 3G handsets. The World Cup™ is the pinnacle of the football calendar and by providing a platform to watch the games, more fans than ever will be able to support the Socceroos," Lucas Neill, Captain of the Socceroos and Optus Football Ambassador said.

Additionally, Optus has secured a deal with SBS where customers will have access to mobile content, complimenting SBS's comprehensive and multi-platform presentation of the road to the World Cup™ and the global event itself. Content from The World Game will be made available to Optus customers, including features, scores analysis and video.

"This deal offers Optus mobile users the very highest quality match broadcasts tailor-made for mobiles. It will give them blanket coverage from morning to night with the whole gamut of FIFA World Cup-related content such as team-specific reports, updates, downloads and clips," said Niclas Ericson, Director of FIFA's TV Division.
