OPTUS ENHANCES MOBILE COVERAGE ALONG 1000 KILOMETRES OF HIGHWAY IN SOUTH WESTERN VICTORIA

29 March 2004

Optus has significantly improved its mobile coverage in the south west of Victoria, enhancing its coverage footprint along more than 1000 kilometres of highway in the past year.

Rob Parcell, Director Victoria, said the south western region had substantially benefited from Optus' $90 million dollar investment in Victoria.

"Last year, Optus built over 30 sites in south western Victoria. Most recently, we installed new mobile facilities in Penshurst, Caramut, Darlington, Pura Pura, and Mount Richmond.

"The objective of the Penshurst site was to provide coverage to the township, the Hamilton Highway between Hamilton and Caramut, and parts of Penshurst Dunked Road and Penshurst Warrnambool Road.

"The Caramut site provides coverage to the township, and along the Hamilton Highway between Penshurst and Mortlake. The Darlington tower further extends our coverage along the Hamilton Highway, and enhances coverage along Darlington Road.

"Our site at Pura Pura provides coverage to the townships of Pura Pura and Vite Vite, and along the Glenelg Highway between our existing sites at Westmere and Skipton. Other major roads between the Glenelg and Hamilton highways will also benefit.

"The Mount Richmond tower provides coverage to the township, and the Portland Nelson Road.

"Improved coverage means that people living, working and travelling in the region now have a greater choice of GSM mobile network. I encourage locals to take advantage of our Coverage Satisfaction Guarantee, and put Optus to the test," Mr Parcell said.

Optus has built more than 500 mobile sites in Victoria during the past four years, and its GSM mobile network provides coverage to 96% of the state’s population.
