Optus today announced it had won a major contract to carry digital TV signals via satellite for the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Corporation. The deal is expected to be worth more than $70 million over its 10-year term.
Managing Director, Optus Wholesale, Warren Hardy said the agreement would see Optus manage the distribution by satellite of the national broadcaster's digital TV transmission. The signal will be transmitted to 42 sites nationally, with scope for further expansion.
"This contract demonstrates Optus' position as the major provider of satellite service in Australia. Our satellites will help SBS to continue to provide quality television to people across Australia as its digital TV program is rolled out," he said.
SBS's digital signal currently reaches 75 per cent of Australia and its reach will increase with the digital rollout allowing more regional, rural and remote viewers to benefit from the service via Optus satellites.
Services under the contract are planned to begin on 1 June 2003.
"Satellite technology is well suited to meet the regional and remote areas communication needs. Optus is pleased to continue its long-standing relationship with SBS by helping deliver its digital services to these areas - giving regional residents the same broadcast service as city viewers," Mr Hardy said.
