OPTUS MOBILE SHORT CUTS

24 June 2002

World Cup Results go to number one

Optus's World Cup soccer results service, Match2Mobile is currently the most popular information service on the Optus network. The World Cup results shot to the number one spot knocking off AFL game results.

Through its Match2Mobile package, mobile users on any network can receive via SMS half-time and full time results of all the World Cup soccer matches plus special newsflashes on important World Cup news.

Optus supports Java developers on road to new mobile services

Optus is continuing its support for Java developers joining forces with Sun Microsystems and Nokia to hold a J2ME Developers briefing last week in Sydney.

J2ME (Java2 Platform Mirco Edition) is the de-facto computer language used for writing programmes for a new generation of mobile phone applications that can run over GPRS and later 3G technologies.

Over 100 developers attended the special forum to discover new ways of taking advantage of the mobile revolution and how to work with carriers and handset manufactures to turn their applications ideas into commercial reality.

Guest speakers included Optus Managing Director, Allen Lew; Sun Microsystems, Senior Engineer, Michael Geisler; Nokia Product Manager, Greg Panikian, and MIDP_NG Expert, Jon Eaves.

Java developers can also enter the Asia Java Mobile Challenge where they can compete for commercial contracts within the SingTel Group.

Australian travelers get their mobiles working in South Korea

In time for the Soccer World Cup, Australian travelers to South Korea can now take advantage of Optus' new roaming agreement with South Korea's second largest mobile operator KTF.

Optus Mobile digital customers can make and receive calls using their existing number whilst travelling in Korea and all calls will be billed back to their Optus account in Australian dollars. KTF customers can now also make calls on their existing number while travelling in Australia.

This is the first time any Australian carrier has launched a roaming agreement with a Korean carrier overcoming the technical difficulties involved in getting two different mobile standards, GSM and CDMA, to work together as a roaming agreement.

Optus has roaming agreements with over 91 carriers in over 184 countries around the world.

SMS Polling Kicking Goals with Footy Fans

AFL footy fans can now have their say on crucial coaching decisions from the couch following the launch of the 'Optus Cybercoach' during Channel's 10 AFL broadcast every Saturday night.

Each week the Channel Ten AFL commentary team will ask 'the hard questions' and invite the viewing audience to voice their opinion by voting on an important match issue. During the broadcast, the Optus Cybercoach poll will reveal the views of the viewers.

Developed for leading consumer-marketing company Legion Interactive and Channel Ten, Optus Cybercoach uses Optus SMS Gateway technology to supporting the polling.
