OPTUS PLAYING A WINNER WITH GAMES GALORE ON GPRS

Optus is getting into wireless gaming introducing three new exclusive mobile games designed especially to run over its faster data speed GPRS service - 'yes' info WAP Plus.

Mr Keir Preedy, Acting Managing Director for Optus Mobile, said phone fun and games were proving a popular drawcard for users around the world.

"In Europe, 30 per cent of Swedes, 20 per cent of Italians and 19 per cent of the British are gamers. While in Japan over 52 per cent of consumers are using their mobile phones for games and entertainment.

"We are starting to see the trend appear in Australia with mobile users starting to game-as-they-go.

"Games on Optus's 'yes' info WAP portal attracted over 100,000 hits in September with Blackjack, Poker and Wapzee among the most popular games," Mr Preedy said.

"To take advantage of the growing interest we are adding another level of gaming with three new games that Optus customers can play using either WAP or GPRS compatible handsets.

"From trivia to word games, treasure hunts to card games, Australians are using their mobiles to make the most of their downtime," Mr Preedy said.

The new games, exclusive to Optus include:

• QuizQuest - a multiple choice trivia game.
• Pictagram - an anagram game with pictorial hints.
• MACE - a text-based adventure game.

Mr Preedy said technology would continue to improve as more handsets and devices, such as handheld computers, became more readily available.

"These new games are just the beginning. Gamers have a lot to look forward to. Better devices with full-colour screens and greater data capacity will continue to enhance the player experience.

"While we certainly haven't reached 'gameboy' status on mobiles yet, the advances in mobile technology mean that we are likely to see full wireless internet capability in the next two years."
