OPTUS SAYS 'YES' TO INCREASED SA MOBILE COVERAGE

15 August 2001

Optus has increased its mobile phone coverage in South Australia, bringing 41 new or upgraded base stations online since March 2000, plus another 17 are planned by March 2002.

According to the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) Performance Monitoring Bulletin for March 2001, Optus has the lowest call drop-out rate in South Australia when compared with other carriers.

Keir Preedy, Director Mobile Network Systems and Programs, said Optus was dedicated to improving the reach and quality of our mobile service.

"We continually investing in our South Australian mobile network to boost mobile coverage.

"Increasing Optus's mobile capacity in South Australia's metropolitan and rural areas has also helped to improve call quality for local business and residents.

"We recognise the need to service rural areas and we are continually striving to provide service to new locations wherever possible," he said.

Over the last year Optus has improved coverage in metropolitan areas such as Brighton, Marden, Plympton, Highbury and Seaton.

South Australian regional areas such as Kingston SE, Mannum, Robe, Minlaton, Yorketown, Victor Harbour, Ardrossan and Leasingham now have better mobile coverage due to the boost in Optus base stations.

The added Optus base stations are able to provide near-continuous car kit coverage along 4,000 kilometres of highway from Adelaide to Cairns, via Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

"In addition, Optus increased its special event coverage by deploying a transportable base station in Adelaide's CBD during the Clipsal 500 V8 Supercars series in April and Sky Show in January, ensuring visiting fans and residents had optimum mobile service," Mr Preedy said.

With 3.7 million mobile customers, a third of the nation's mobile subscribers are using the Optus network.
