CABLE & WIRELESS OPTUS AND COMMERCE ONE WIN CONTRACT FOR PAPER INDUSTRY E-COMMERCE PLATFORM

12 October 2000

Cable & Wireless Optus announced today that it has been selected to provide the e-commerce platform for Australia's largest paper manufacturer and distributor, PaperlinX.

The platform will be based on BuySite procurement software from Commerce One and CWO MarketSite and will enable customers to purchase paper products online from PaperlinX merchants. The platform will bring efficiencies to the complex distribution chain for paper in Australia.

David Stokes-McKeon, Director E-Solutions, Cable & Wireless Optus said he was pleased to welcome PaperlinX to the growing family of CWO MarketSite users.

"CWO MarketSite will allow PaperlinX to reduce inventory costs, reduce distribution times and improve customer relationships between the PaperlinX merchants and their customers.

"Cable & Wireless Optus will first provide an online service to the customers of the PaperlinX merchants Dalton Fine Paper, Tomasetti Paper House, PaperHouseXpress and Paperpoint in Australia and Dalton Fine Paper in New Zealand. We will add an e-commerce facility to their existing capabilities and allow the merchants to provide additional value to their customers," said Mr Stokes-McKeon.

Up to 6,000 customers including office retailers and printers will be able to purchase from PaperlinX merchants by browsing an electronic catalogue, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. CWO MarketSite will process all transactions.

PaperlinX has purchased the license for the BuySite software which is planned to be hosted by Cable & Wireless Optus in Sydney. Implementation, which will be done in conjunction with Deloittes Consulting, will commence immediately.

David Goldthorp, Executive General Manager, Corporate Development, PaperlinX said that in seeking a solution, PaperlinX's key issues were the right technology, a track record and local expertise and support.

"Cable & Wireless Optus and Commerce One offered us what we were looking for. We wanted to first focus our attention where we could gain maximum leverage from electronic trading, this is the link between our merchants and their many customers," said Mr Goldthorp.

The second phase of the project will allow PaperlinX to procure goods and materials from its suppliers using the same BuySite software. PaperlinX will save money by aggregating purchasing, controlling rogue spending and through process efficiency.
