AUSTRALIA'S FIRST WAP SERVICE GOES LIVE

30 November 1999

Cable & Wireless Optus today launched Australia's first wireless application protocol (WAP) service. Called Networker, the service gives customers access to online information and services from a mobile phone.

"Optus' GSM customers can buy a WAP phone and access our Networker service from today," said Paul O'Sullivan, Managing Director Mobile, Cable & Wireless Optus.

Networker effectively converts a mobile phone into a mobile Internet machine. The service features information menus for share prices, breaking news, sports news, horoscopes and weather.

"The killer application of Networker is the ability to provide mobile access to most Internet email accounts. Networker customers can read, reply to and send email," said Mr O'Sullivan.

"Networker means freedom for people who are on the move and want to stay in touch. Now you can check your email in a taxi, at the airport, by the beach or in the pub. No need to be tied to a desk and no hassles with cumbersome laptops," Mr O'Sullivan said.

The combination of the portability of a mobile phone and ready access to Internet based information will make WAP technology irresistible according to Mr O'Sullivan.

Optus will continue to add to Networker content, further enhancing the services available to customers. In addition to information services, Optus will move to transaction services such as banking and ticketing later next year.

Networker is priced on an access per minute basis with no monthly access fees. Optus World is retailing the WAP compliant Nokia 7110 at $865 per handset, or at $249 on an Optus 'yes' Plus 55 plan.
