ISO9001 certification provides recognition of an organisation's commitment to defined processes and continuous improvement, particularly in managing complex design projects. Most notably, Cable & Wireless Optus is working with the Department of Defence in developing a mobile satellite communications network. Much of this project has required the establishment of secure communications for use in remote areas or unusual locations, such as onboard naval ships.

Innovations in the Department of Defence projects have included the development of satellite back-packs for soldiers and a transportable satellite station which can fit into the boot of a car. Optus Solutions Management has been responsible for implementation of this project and Defence insists that its suppliers are certified to ISO9001 standards.
