VoLTE Guide: Explore Voice over LTE calls

At Optus, we’re all about making sure your calls are the best quality they can be. That’s where VoLTE comes in. If you haven’t heard of VoLTE before or aren’t sure how it works, we’ve put together a guide so you can learn how to get the best out of your voice calls.
VoLTE, or Voice over LTE, allows you to have high definition quality calls by using the LTE network, which you might know as the 4G network. By using LTE for voice calls, you can enjoy a high audio quality and have your calls connect faster.
There are a few ways that VoLTE improves your voice calls. By turning your voice calls into data packets that are sent over the LTE network, this means a faster connection time for your call.
Another advantage of VoLTE over traditional cellular calls is that you can talk on your phone and browse the internet at the same time. Before VoLTE, your phone would only be able to do one or the other at a time. Now it has no problem multitasking, making it perfect for those who like to do more than one thing at a time – especially if you get stuck on hold.
We’re happy to offer VoLTE at Optus so that you can get the best quality calls possible. As long as you have a phone that’s VoLTE-capable and you have access the Optus 4G network, you’ll be good to go.
Most new phones are VoLTE-capable, but if you’re not sure, check if yours is in the list of compatible phones.
Something else you might have heard of that’s similar to VoLTE is VoWiFi, which stands for Voice over WiFi. Like VoLTE, VoWiFi transmits your voice calls using data, except unlike 4G VoLTE, it uses the WiFi network you’re connected to. This can be a huge help if you’re in an area without good reception like a black spot and need to make a call – just make sure that the WiFi network you’re connected to has a good signal.
The first step is to make sure your provider has enabled VoLTE for your service by contacting them. Asking them to turn on VoLTE means that VoWiFi will also be enabled on your service.
Note: If you’re an Optus Prepaid customer who joined after 7th July 2021, VoLTE will be automatically enabled on your service. If you joined us before 7th July 2021, it’s being progressively rolled out and to check when you can access it, please contact us.
Once you’ve checked that VoLTE is enabled with your provider, the next step is checking your device settings. Some Android phones will display a ‘VoLTE’ icon next to the normal ‘4G’ icon when they’re in a VoLTE coverage area. To check if you’re currently using VoLTE, or to turn it on, go into your phone’s network settings. The VoLTE settings should come under cellular network, call settings or something similar, depending on what phone you have.
For more information about your phone and how to turn on VoLTE, a good place to start is the website for your phone model. If you need more help finding your VoLTE settings, head into one of our Optus stores or give us a call and we’ll be happy to help you out.
