Optus Ultra WiFi 6 Modem FAQs

What is WiFi 6?

WiFi 6 enables faster and more reliable wireless transmission of data. It allows more devices to be connected than WiFi 5 with less congestion and offers stronger security with WPA3.Why get the nbn modem with my plan?

Our next gen Ultra WiFi modem utilises WiFi6 technology, so you can enjoy faster speeds and stronger coverage in more corners of the home. It delivers fast nbn download speeds so you can stream, play games and work from home. The Optus modem gives you access the Living Network for features like Pause, that lets you take a digital breather and enjoy the moments that matter.

Does the modem affect internet speed?

The Optus Ultra WiFi Modem can deliver faster speeds than our previous modems. Please note that actual speeds may vary and are limited by the selected plan speed. Other factors can also impact the speed of your home internet, like your nbn connection type to the home, the number of connected devices, building materials and home layout.

How do I set up a nbn modem?

Check out our handy Getting started Optus nbn page for steps to setup your modem and booster.

What’s the price of the WiFi 6 modem?

The cost of the Ultra WiFi 6 modem is $306.

If the modem is included with your plan, then you pay $0 for the modem if you stay connected for 36 months. If you leave within 36 months, you’ll pay the remaining modem cost in full (any credits or discounts will be forfeited).

What is the difference between a router and modem?

A modem connects you to the internet which allows you to send and receive information. A router on the other hand, acts as a connecting device between the modem and other devices such as TVs, tablets and mobile phones.

Do I need a modem and router?

No, the Optus Ultra WiFi Modem contains the same functionality as a traditional router built into the same unit.

How can I upgrade to the WiFi 6 modem?

To upgrade to the WiFi 6 modem, you can call us, message us, speak with us in store or sign up to an Optus nbn plan online.

All existing customers will have the choice to take the WiFi 6 modem, however they will have to pay out any equipment fees (if applicable) and start a new 36-month Device Payment Plan.

Can I get a phone line?

Yes, you can add a phone line to your home nbn plan with an Optus modem. Generally, the phone line will be ready to use in 24-48 hours of your service being activated.

Where is the best place for my modem?

For best results, position your modem 1 – 1.5m off the ground in a central location in your home. Keep it away from large electronic devices ( like TV’s & speakers), somewhere easily accessible, in a well-ventilated area. If your home is 2 levels, your modem should be placed on the ground level, and you may require a WiFi extender or WiFi mesh device to optimise your service. Find out more about modem setup.
