In 2024, millions of Australians relied on Optus to stay connected, stream, share, and create. With over 1 billion GBs of mobile data used1, Optus continued to deliver fast speeds, great coverage, and offered innovative ways to give back to communities across Australia.

2024 by the numbers:

  • Customers used an incredible 1 billion GBs of mobile data, enough to stream every episode of Squid Game Season 1 and the highly anticipated Season 2 over 37 million times. And if that’s not enough action, it’s also the equivalent of streaming over 9 million Premier League matches on Optus Sport. That’s a whole lot of drama, goals scored and edge-of-your-seat action in HD throughout 2024.
  • Optus upgraded over 600 sites across Australia to 5G, bringing fast speeds and greater 5G coverage to communities across the country, including regional areas like Maitland, Tweed Heads and Ballarat.
  • Beyond better connectivity, Optus focused on giving back. 6 million GBs of data was donated by customers this year through Optus’ Donate Your Data™ Program. Overall, the program has helped over 50,000 Australians in need stay connected to essential services, education, and loved ones.
    • New South Wales led the way with 2 million GB donated, followed by Victoria (1.6 million GB) and Queensland (1.3 million GB)2.
  • Optus also took action to keep customers safe from scams, blocking a total of 165 million scam calls and SMS messages. As well as driving awareness of trending scams through Optus ScamWise to help protect Australians from fraudulent activity and give them greater peace of mind.
  • In October, Optus was recognised by Opensignal as its most awarded mobile network in Australia3, including having the fastest 5G mobile network for average download speeds nationally for the seventh time running.

Optus also launched its 7-day free Network Trial4 in July, offering Australians a risk-free way to experience the strength and coverage of the Optus network. Thousands of Australians have taken part so far, discovering the power and speed of Optus' award-winning mobile network at no cost and with no commitments.

“2024 has been a year of focus and reflection for Optus,” said Anthony Shiner, Managing Director, Customer Solutions at Optus.

“We’ve spent time listening to our customers’ needs and worked hard to deliver solutions that enhance their experience. From expanding 5G coverage to helping those in need through our Donate Your Data program, we’ve focused on making life simpler and better connected for millions of Australians. As we look to 2025, we’re committed to making continued investments in our network and creating a safer, stronger digital future for everyone.”

Optus’ Network Year in Review is based on personalised insights for postpaid customers with a single mobile service, ensuring customers only see their own relevant summaries, while sharing meaningful and engaging trends. As part of this initiative, Optus customers will receive EDMs highlighting their unique usage trends, allowing them to reflect on their year of connectivity in a fun and personal way.

With over $500 million invested in network upgrades in 2024 and big plans for 2025, Optus is ready to deliver strong connections, innovative solutions, and great possibilities for Australians in the year ahead.

1 Based on mobile data usage of all Optus postpaid mobile services from 1 January 2024 – 24 November 2024.
2 Based on Donate your Data (DYD) donations from all eligible Optus mobile services from 1 January 2024 – 12 November 2024.
3 Opensignal Awards – Australia: Mobile Network Experience Report October 2024, based on independent analysis of mobile measurements recorded during the period 1 July to 28 September 2024.
