Be Seen with a Sunflower at Optus

25 June 2024, 9:00 AM

Extreme close up of an Optus employee's jacket. Next to the Optus logo on the jacket, the employee has pinned an 'I Support The Sunflower' badge.

Optus is proud to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program which helps draw attention to the needs of customers who have a non-visible disability, such as autism, dementia, low vision or chronic pain.

This initiative is an important part of Optus’ commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all customers, including those with non-visible disabilities.

Some people may find shopping a bit tricky – maybe they can't get into a store easily, the in-store shopping experience is too noisy or bright for them, or the store layout changes, meaning someone who has low vision finds it difficult to navigate an unfamiliar store.

By participating in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, Optus is taking a proactive stance in acknowledging these challenges and providing a supportive hand to those who need it.

Over 2,000 Optus staff across the country have received comprehensive training to help them recognise and assist customers wearing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard or other identifiers.

The training provided under the Hidden Disability Sunflower program ensures that our team members are equipped to provide the necessary support discreetly and respectfully, fostering a shopping experience that is both comfortable and accessible.

The training affirmed the empathetic approach that we lead with at Optus – not only throughout the shopping experience but across all aspects of support and customer service.

Optus’ dedicated support team, Specialist Care, are skilled and empowered to provide vulnerable customers personalised and expert assistance during challenging life situations, emphasising the telco’s commitment to ensuring vulnerable customers stay connected.

Customers can signal their need for additional support in a way that is recognised and respected by our staff by wearing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower.

Additionally, the recent refurbishment of Optus retail stores has created fully inclusive spaces for all customers.

Optus has given careful consideration to layout, signage and accessibility features – such as wide aisles for easy wheelchair access – to accommodate the diverse needs of our customers.

Find out more about the Sunflower, where to get a lanyard and other Sunflower-friendly locations on the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower website.

Customers are encouraged to visit the Optus website to learn about additional services available for customers with a disability, including tailored support from the Optus Specialist Care team.
