Optus gives customers the flexibility to lease their handset with the launch of the 24 month Optus My Plan Flex and My Plan Business Flex options.
These new leasing plans allow customers to upgrade to a new eligible device after 12 months for $99 if they return their current phone in good working order and sign up to a new 24 month plan.
Ben White, Managing Director of Product and Marketing at Optus, said, “Technology is moving faster than ever, and we want our customers who sign up to an Optus My Plan Flex or My Plan Business Flex, to have the option of being able to upgrade to a new eligible smartphone any time after 12 months.
“Being able to access a new eligible device after 12 months means we can stay connected in the fastest and most efficient way, and for our business customers this can mean both time and money, so it makes sense for us to be offering this flexibility for small businesses and consumer customers alike.
“We know that once a customer has upgraded their handset at the end of their plan, their old device usually sits unused in a drawer until it is thrown away – with My Plan Flex options, when it’s time to upgrade, we’ll make sure the old phone is put to good use so you can feel good knowing you’ve helped reduce e-waste,” Mr White said.
How does it work?
Optus My Plan Flex and My Business Plan Flex plans allow customers to lease an eligible device on a 24 month plan and use it to access the Optus network.
After 12 months, customers can choose to upgrade the device by paying a fee of $99. To do this, the current device must be returned in good working order to Optus and the customer must sign up to a new 24-month plan.
If the phone is damaged, customers are still able to upgrade to a new device after 12 months, however a damage fee will apply. If it’s an easy fix like a cracked screen, a damage fee of up to $229 will apply, and if the phone can’t be repaired, the customer will pay a damage fee of up to $499 to upgrade to a new one.
Customers do not own the device and the device must be returned to Optus in good working order (otherwise damage fees will apply) at the end of the 24 month contract. Customers can offer to purchase the device at the end of the 24 month lease contract at fair market value (determined at the time).
If customers do not return the device at the end of the 24 month lease contract term, monthly device charges must be paid for up to 6 months (as well as plan fees). At that point, if the device is still not returned within 14 days, the customer will be charged the fair market value of the device at the time and the customer will own the device.
