Investment ensures better mobile coverage for local residents and travellers, broader investment to improve coverage across the Darling Downs.
Optus is improving mobile phone coverage at Toowoomba’s Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport (Wellcamp Airport) and over the next 18 months will invest in 10 new mobile phone towers across greater Toowoomba to boost mobile coverage and experience.
Optus will upgrade mobile services at the airport terminal and car park, ensuring faster mobile internet speeds for customers with compatible 4G mobile phones and tablets, while also enhancing 3G customer experience.
Dennis Wong, Acting Managing Director of Networks, Optus said upgrades to the airport and across Toowoomba were critical for the local economy particularly business operators requiring mobile infrastructure, local residents and fly-in fly-out workers in the resources sector.
“As the gateway to central-western Queensland and nearby Granite Belt, reliable mobile coverage is crucial for residents, tourists and business and we are committed to keeping our customers connected.
“We understand the need for better mobile coverage for people living, working and commuting in the Toowoomba region and will continue raising the bar for improved mobile coverage in the local area and across regional Australia.”
Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport developer Mr John Wagner said he was delighted Optus customers would now have improved mobile phone service at the airport.
“As one of the State Government’s long-term ‘strategic’ airports it’s vital we have improved services for customers and stakeholders,” said Mr Wagner.
“Optus has made a significant investment in ensuring our customers can enjoy the benefits of their latest 4G plus network services, which extend to the terminal and car park, and the apron area where aircraft are parked and boarded.”
Optus has also committed to installing an onsite tower in the next two years to coincide with work on the $1.6bn Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.
“This will improve services not only at the airport and Wellcamp Business Park but in nearby Westbrook and Charlton.”
As part of the upgrades, 10 new towers are planned for the Toowoomba region. This follows a new tower at Kearneys Spring which was turned on in recent weeks and 4G upgrades to 24 towers over the past two years.
The Optus network handles over 50 million calls and 65 million SMS messages every day. This growing demand for mobile services is why Optus is continuously raising the bar when it comes to improving mobile coverage in regional Australia.
