Lead carrier Optus switches on mobile coverage in CBD underground rail tunnels
Melbourne rail commuters can now call, text, email and browse the internet on their mobiles, tablets and laptops while travelling through the City Loop underground tunnels.
David Epstein, Vice President Corporate and Regulatory Affairs at Optus, said 3G voice and 4G data coverage is now available to all mobile customers using the Flagstaff, Melbourne Central and Parliament underground station platforms as well as throughout the City Loop tunnels.
“Whether you’re making a call, checking work emails or streaming your favourite show, commuters now have mobile coverage throughout the City Loop,” Mr Epstein said.
“As the lead carrier for this complex project, Optus is pleased to provide mobile coverage for Loop commuters as we know how important it is for customers to stay connected, wherever they are.
“Optus is continually investing and expanding our network in order to provide customers with a great experience, reliable coverage and superfast download speeds.”
In partnership with the Victorian Government, Public Transport Victoria and VicTrack, Optus developed the infrastructure providing mobile coverage to all passengers travelling through the City Loop.
Further work will be undertaken to even further enhance mobile coverage in the City Loop, ensuring Melbourne rail commuters benefit from the best possible network experience.
To celebrate the coverage switch on, AM peak rail commuters at Melbourne Central station can pick up a myki phone sleeve from Optus tomorrow morning, Friday 16 October 2015, during the morning peak (while stocks last).
