On Friday 1 May, the Optus Tour de Cure team will arrive in Geelong for some well-earned rest and relaxation before they set out on the last stage of this year’s tour.
The Optus team will head down to Eastern Beach from 4.30pm with the 180 riders, crew and volunteers on the tour, to relax and meet members of the local community on what will be the final stop on the tour.
More than just a bike ride, the Tour de Cure is an event that raises funds for cancer research and increases cancer prevention awareness, with the ultimate aim of one day eliminating cancer. This year, Optus has a team of 30 full time and guest riders joining in the 1,194km ride from Adelaide to Melbourne. The Tour visits communities along the route, encouraging people to make healthy life choices to help prevent cancer.
Murray King, Optus Chief Financial Officer, said, “It’s very exciting to ride into Geelong knowing that we are only one stage away from completing another Tour de Cure. Getting the chance to head down to Eastern Beach with our team mates for some relaxation will help us prepare for that all important final stage.”
“I am so proud of what the Optus team has accomplished during these last eight days on the tour. They have ridden over 1,100km, through rain and shine. We have met some amazing people and heard some inspiring stories. We have also raised over $125,000 in donations this year to go towards cancer research and hopefully one day, finding a cure,” said Mr King.
The Tour de Cure is a not-for-profit cycling organisation, dedicated to raising funds for the fight against cancer. This year’s signature fund raising tour will see riders make their way from Adelaide, along the coast of South Australia and Victoria, before arriving in Melbourne.
