On Tuesday 28 April, the Optus Tour de Cure team will arrive in Mt Gambier as official sponsors of the ninth Tour de Cure ride.
More than just a bike ride, the Tour de Cure is an event that raises funds for cancer research and increases cancer prevention awareness, with the ultimate aim of eliminating this awful disease. This year, Optus has a team of 30 riders either doing the full ride or part of it from Adelaide to Melbourne. The Tour visits communities along the route encouraging people to make healthy life choices to help prevent cancer.
Murray King, Optus Chief Financial Officer, said, “Optus is a long-term sponsor of the Tour de Cure, supporting the organisation since its inception in 2007. According to the Cancer Council, one in three cancer cases are preventable, proving that prevention awareness is just as important as fundraising during the Tour.”
Joining the 180 Tour riders, crew and volunteers, the Optus team will have the opportunity for a bit of rest and relaxation following a 130km ride from Robe in Victoria. The Optus team will have the chance to meet members of the local community when they stop off for a visit at the Mt Gambier Optus store.
“Tour de Cure’s signature ride is an amazing opportunity for the Optus team to spread the message of cancer prevention and each year it gets bigger and better. Having the chance to meet some of the local community and hear their stories will help give us a real boost during the most gruelling parts of the tour and it’s always great to meet members of the Optus team whenever we have the chance,” Mr King said.
The Tour de Cure is a not-for-profit cycling organisation, dedicated to raising funds for the fight against cancer. This year’s signature fund raising tour will see teams embark on a 1,194km journey from Adelaide, through coastal Victoria, before arriving in Melbourne.
