OPTUS TO EXPAND MOBILE COVERAGE AND INTRODUCE 4G SERVICES ON EYRE PENINSULA

Optus has announced a continued investment plan for Eyre Peninsula with eight new sites to be rolled out as well as the introduction of 4G services later this year.

“Optus has been committed to expanding coverage beyond Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Ceduna across the Eyre Peninsula over the last three years.  We have rolled out more than 20 sites from Port Neil, to Smoky Bay, Coffin Bay to Wudinna, so customers in the area can enjoy a better mobile experience while out and about and travelling,” Vic McClelland, Managing Director of Optus Networks said.

“Our plans include building new sites in Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Elliston as well as at Caralue Bluff, Mt Damper and Ungarra. In addition, teams are also working on upgrading sites across the Peninsula in preparation for Optus 4G services at the end of this year as new 4G spectrum becomes available,” he said.

Local Yes Optus store owner, Steve Haines, welcomed the new commitment for extended coverage and the preparation for 4G services later this year for the Eyre Peninsula.

“On the back of Optus’ network roll out across Eyre Peninsula over the last few years, the announcement today shows Optus’ commitment to bring further choice and competition for us here,” Mr Haines said.

“Local businesses and farmers will be able to operate in more places, while residents can now stay connected with their loved ones when they’re out and about – connecting communities across the peninsula.”

Work is already underway on upgrades on sites across the peninsula and Optus design and acquisition teams will work with local communities and authorities to find suitable locations for new sites.

“We will continue to work and keep communities informed of our progress as sites develop from planning stages to build, through updates on our website and through our local store in Port Lincoln,” Mr McClelland said.

“Optus is advanced on an upgrade and expansion plan for our 4G and 3G mobile networks across the country, and over the next 6 to 12 months we’ll roll out more superfast 4G nationally across metro and regional Australia, as new 4G spectrum becomes available, including on the Peninsula.”

The Optus mobile network reaches 98.5 per cent of the Australian population for voice and data.
