We know it’s a difficult time across Northern Queensland due to Tropical Cyclone Ita and severe weather conditions across the region, so we just want to quickly update you on our network status in the area.
Our network:
Optus’ networks team are working with the relevant emergency services and power authorities to monitor Cyclone conditions, and any impact on our network in the region.
We’ve deployed generators, mobile base stations, spare parts and network technicians to the area, ready for any power outages or damaged mobile towers.
Currently, we have 8 x 3G sites impacted by Cyclone Ita, due to local power outages. They are in Mossman, Whitfield, Kewarra, Craiglee, Cooktown, Daintree and Wonga. Our teams are working to get generators to these sites to restore services, as soon as it safe to do so.
Emergency services:
If your mobile service is interrupted during the storm, and your phone is showing “SOS only” or “Emergency Calls Only”, you can still call 000 from your mobile – you’ll be switched to the nearest available mobile network.
Smartphone tips:
Optus recommends keeping an eye on your smartphone battery levels. If your power is out, think about conserving the battery life of your smartphone. Only use it when necessary, limit internet browsing unless it’s for updates from emergency services or news outlets, and switch off Bluetooth and any regular updates to apps as these can drain your battery.
