OPTUS TOUR DE CURE TEAM RIDES INTO LAUNCESTON

4 April 2014

On Friday 4 April, Optus cyclists will arrive in Launceston as official sponsors of the eighth Tour De Cure ride. They’ll be joined by 11 time yellow jersey winner Phil Anderson who is accompanying them as team mentor.

More than just a bike ride, the Tour De Cure is an event that raises funds for cancer research and increases cancer prevention awareness, with the ultimate aim of eliminating this awful disease. This year, Optus has a team of 16 people either doing the full ride or part of it from Sydney to Hobart. The Tour visits communities and schools along the route encouraging people to make healthy life choices to help prevent cancer, with the message: ‘Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy’.

Murray King, Optus CFO and Optus Tour De Cure Team Captain, said, “Optus is a long-term sponsor of the Tour De Cure, supporting the organisation since its inception in 2007. According to the Cancer Council, one in three cancer cases are preventable, proving that prevention awareness is just as important as fundraising during the Tour. With many Optus staff members having friends or family affected by cancer, this is a cause close to many hearts.”

Joining the 111 Tour riders, the Optus team, with mentor Phil Anderson, will be visiting Royal Park in Launceston where Optus will be holding a fete for the riders to rest and recuperate before the last leg of the tour. Riders can relax and enjoy a well deserved sausage sizzle and a coffee. Locals can enjoy a range of activities including a jumping castle and pony rides for the kids.

Murray King, Optus CFO, said, “I’ve taken part in Tour De Cure’s signature ride for the past four years and each year gets bigger and better in terms of the awareness and money that we raise in the fight to cure cancer. Having cycling legend Phil Anderson, by the team’s side this year will help give us a real boost during the most gruelling parts of the tour. I’m sure his words of encouragement and support will keep us motivated for this really worth cause.”

Phil Anderson, Optus Tour De Cure mentor said, “The Tour De Cure is fantastic event for a worthy cause and I’m excited to lend it and the Optus team a hand. Many of us riding in the Tour have seen the devastating effects of cancer, so it’s important that we all do our part to help eradicate this disease.”

The Tour De Cure is a not-for-profit cycling organisation, dedicated to raising funds for the fight against cancer. This year’s signature fund raising tour will give new meaning to the phrase ‘Sydney to Hobart’, with 111 riders making their way from Sydney, through regional Victoria, before crossing to Tasmania to eventually arrive in Hobart, a total of 1,576km.

Samsung is supporting Optus throughout the ride by providing each member of the team with a smartphone to document their progress, assist with directions and help spread awareness.
