As of 6pm Monday afternoon (28/1/2013), the Optus mobile network continues operating from Sunshine Coast to Cairns. Optus mobile and fixed broadband services are available in the major population centres of Central and North Queensland.
3G and 2G mobile and fixed broadband services are available in Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Gympie and the Sunshine Coast.
There continues to be scattered mobile outages across Central and South East QLD regions to varying degrees including Longreach, Dalby, Tin Can Bay, and Rainbow Beach.
The Optus mobile network in Bundaberg is currently operating normally with the Optus network team monitoring the area as a priority due to the current flood situation.
In NSW, Optus mobile coverage in Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Port Macquarie are unaffected, but we are monitoring the situation as weather conditions continue to deteriorate across the state.
Ms Sam Kennedy, Director Optus Queensland said, “The Optus network team is closely monitoring the situation across Queensland to ensure we keep the network operational where it is currently available and to restore services as quickly as possible where sites have lost power.”
If anyone is experiencing a disruption to their service, Optus wants them to know they can call 000 from their mobile as it will switch to the nearest available mobile network.
Where possible, we have deployed backup generators in accessible locations throughout the flood affected areas to allow us to respond to power outages.
In South East QLD there are some disruptions to individual mobile sites in Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Toowoomba due to power outages. However, overlapping coverage from surrounding mobile sites should ensure a continuation of services in the vast majority of areas.
For Optus fixed voice and broadband customers in Brisbane and Ipswich areas, there are disruptions due to power outages with the main suburbs affected including Tarragindi, Mansfield, Redcliffe, Wavell Heights, Indooroopilly, Windsor, Wynnum, Holland, Rochedale South, Regents Park, Loganholme and Toowong.
If you are experiencing a power outage at home, Ms Kennedy recommends keeping an eye on your smartphone battery levels.
“If your power is out, please think about conserving the battery life of your smartphone. Only use it when necessary, limit internet browsing unless it’s for updates from emergency services or news outlets, and switch off Bluetooth and any regular updates to apps as these can drain your battery.”
Optus is using Facebook (facebook.com/Optus) and twitter (twitter.com/Optus) as its primary communication channel for updating network status. Please refer to Facebook and Twitter for the latest information. Our next update will be available on these channels tomorrow morning (29January).
