OPTUS NAMED CARRIER OF THE YEAR

13 March 2009

Optus has been named 'Carrier of the Year' by Australia's leading telecommunication industry association, the Australian Telecommunication User Group (ATUG).

Optus was awarded Carrier of the Year for its contribution to telecommunications in Australia, with specific recognition given for its work in satellite communications.

The Managing Director of ATUG, Rosemary Sinclair said, "The award recognises Optus' ability and determination to solve difficult communications problems in partnership with end users. ATUG sees Optus as a key player in Australia's communications sector and welcomes the national 3G roll-out as a great contribution in 2008 and 2009 to competition and end-user choice. Congratulations Optus!"

Optus provides competitively priced wireless broadband and 3G mobile services covering 96 per cent of the Australian population using a combination of 900/2100 MHz spectrum bands.

ATUG recognised Optus' work with the United States National Science Foundation's Antarctic Program. Optus provides satellite coverage into McMurdo Sound in Antarctica, an integral part of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) network.

The Optus D1 satellite coverage into McMurdo enables the collection and distribution of data to the scientific community working in the region. Under the NPOESS program this data will soon include the Earth's weather atmosphere, oceans, land and space which will lead to substantial improvements in weather forecasts, severe weather monitoring and detection of climate change.

Paul Sheridan, Director of Optus Satellite said, "This is a fantastic acknowledgement of the work of a small passionate specialist team with over 30 years experience in satellite communications. It is also great recognition of satellite technology being able to provide innovative business solutions no matter how remote the location.

"Satellite is a key differentiator for our business. Optus provides broadcasting and broadband services to every corner of Australia - making a real difference to people's lives.

"We work with some of the biggest names in broadcasting - including ABC, FOXTEL, Globecast Australia, Remote Areas Broadcasters, SBS, Sky New Zealand, and UBI World TV to deliver services across Australia and New Zealand. Satellite services ensure people in regional and remote Australia have access to television and entertainment services.

"We also work with leading Government agencies such as NSW Department of Education and Training to deliver two way communication and Interactive Distance Learning. Not to mention broadband services to remote communities and mining sites in outback Australia.

"2009 is a big year for Optus' satellite group with the launch of our third D-series satellite planned for later this year. This will increase Optus' fleet capacity by more than 30 percent and represents an overall investment in excess of A$600 million," Mr Sheridan said.
