OPTUS DELIVERS MORE MOBILE COVERAGE ACROSS AUSTRALIA

24 February 2009

Optus announced today the Thuraya GSM/Satellite dual mode handset is available in selected Optus retail outlets.

Thuraya's GSM/Satellite dual mode handset will reduce the need for customers in rural and regional areas to carry around multiple or bulky mobile handsets. Thuraya's dual mode handset allows customers to use the same phone on both the Optus GSM and Thuraya Satellite networks.

Michael Smith, Acting Managing Director, Optus Consumer said, "We are committed to increasing our customer's access to the latest technology and most innovative mobile solutions, especially in the more remote and regional areas of Australia.

"These unique handsets will offer customers; including farmers, fisherman, boating enthusiasts and cross country travellers, access to a next generation GSM style phone that will allow them to make and receive calls across Australia and even 200kms out to sea.

"As a bonus, this new dual mode satellite phone is almost unrecognisable as a traditional satellite handset with its GSM style features - it's small, light and compact," Mr Smith said.

Thuraya's GSM/Satellite dual mode (SG-2520) handset is available from selected Optus dealerships including Optus World, 'yes' Optus shops, Telechoice, Allphones and Network Communications or by calling Optus Direct on 13 33 45.

Optus is offering customers a variety of payment options including;

  • $1650 including GST (SRP) outright,
  • a 12 or 24 month contract with handset repayment options,
  • a month-to-month rate plan with handset repayment options,
  • There is also a $50 per month service fee for the satellite service that customers
    can add to their new or existing Optus Consumer GSM mobile rate plan.

Some of the key benefits of the Optus Thuraya Satellite service include;

  • Convenience, with the small, light and compact dual mode satellite phone
  • A single Australian mobile number for both GSM and satellite calls
  • Network selection between the Optus GSM and Thuraya Satellite networks
  • Features including SMS, Built in GPS and built in camera
