OPTUS FIRST TO MARKET WITH IP STORAGE SOLUTION

In an Australian first, Optus has launched the first fully managed, online data storage solution for IP users in the SME and large corporate sectors.

Optus EXPAN IP Storage uses new Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) technology and eliminates the need for costly deployment of new networking infrastructure.

Optus Business Managing Director, Peter Kaliaropoulos, said Optus EXPAN IP Storage was ideal for companies with an IP infrastructure requiring a networked repository.

"Once again Optus has led the telecommunications industry by developing high-quality IP technologies in conjunction with our partners Hitachi Data Systems, SecureDataGroup and Cisco Systems®.

"Unlike traditional storage networked solutions which use proprietary technologies to transmit and receive data, Optus EXPAN IP Storage runs on ubiquitous and familiar IP networks therefore minimal training of existing personnel is required to support it.

The solution complements a long list of IP-based firsts for Optus, including Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), Multi Protocol Layer Switching networks, GPRS and satellite - which have all brought significant benefits to the day-to-day running of Australian corporates.

Mr Kaliaropoulos said once the stored data was IP compatible, customers could run it over their Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN).
