Optus announced a significant satellite deal with Ok Tedi Mining Limited to deliver reliable connections for data traffic between its mine in Papua New Guinea and its Brisbane data centre.
Ok Tedi Mining is the first customer to use Optus' new international satellite service, SatData Global, which provides fast and reliable broadband access to remote locations. Its location in the near impenetrable Star Mountains in PNG makes Ok Tedi Mining an ideal candidate for the technology.
Warren Hardy, Managing Director Optus Wholesale, said the two-year deal is important as it delivers Ok Tedi Mining a cost-effective service that benefits its mining workforce through improved broadband access.
"Optus' satellite service is a proficient solution for companies with remote workforces. There is little to no infrastructure required to increase access to an 'always-on' broadband connection via satellite," he said.
Ok Tedi Mining Managing Director, Keith Faulkner, said it is important for people located at the mine to have reliable communication services to immediately access the company's data and internal systems.
"Optus has been responsive to our needs. Its satellite service is providing consistent quality communications to improve the working environment at the mine through speedier access to the internet and email," said Mr Faulkner.
Optus and Ok Tedi Mining worked closely with PNG Telikom to ensure the provisioning of the satellite services was completed.
The service operates on Optus' very small aperture terminal (VSAT) network and delivers two-way connectivity via satellite links enabling dedicated bandwidth capacity. Additional services can be quickly activated because there is no need to build on the ground infrastructure.
The new global service is based on the existing Australian platform which has been extended to operate on an APT Telecom Apstar satellite, capacity that is accessible as part of the Optus/SingTel fleet.
