OPTUS SECURES LONG TERM SUPPLY OF CONSUMER TELEPHONY EQUIPMENT

Optus today announced a $38.6 million deal to secure a long-term source of supply of consumer telephony equipment from Motorola.

The deal will see Optus purchase Motorola CableCom Cable Access Units (CAUs) and Cable Control Frames (CCFs) for connection to the Optus HFC cable network.

Martin Dalgleish, Managing Director, Optus Consumer & Multimedia said the deal demonstrated Optus' strong and continuing commitment to competition in the local loop.

"The deal demonstrates our confidence in the prospects of local telephony. It allows us to meet our ambitious growth targets. We are currently installing more than 3,000 new lines per month."

Mr Dalgleish said the deal built on Optus' recently announced arrangements to carry Foxtel over its pay television service.

"We see tremendous opportunities for customer growth on the HFC cable via the delivery of telephony, high speed data and pay television. The Motorola deal helps us seize those opportunities."
