Cable & Wireless Optus announced that it was successful in bidding for 3G spectrum in today's 2 GHz auction held by the Australian Communications Authority.
Optus paid a total of A$248.87 million for 3G spectrum. This includes $241.1 million for a national licence which covers 10 MHz in capital cities and 5 MHz in regional areas, plus Optus bought 5 MHz of unpaired spectrum in most capital cities for $7.77 million.
Paul O'Sullivan, Managing Director Mobile, Cable & Wireless Optus, said the company was proud to now be ready to play a lead role in the implementation of the next phase of the digital data future for Australia.
Mr O'Sullivan said the final bid price was a fantastic result for Optus and reflected the company's commitment to lead with 3G in Australia.
"The final price was within our forecast and represents great value to our shareholders. The results of the auction are a win for the industry, commonsense and the Australian consumer," he said.
On a per population basis for equivalent spectrum, Australian carriers have paid only $61 per head of population. This compares to the European 3G auctions where carriers paid $407 per head, while 1800 MHz spectrum in Australia last year went for $134 per head.
"We are confident there's a strong business case for 3G, if you have the scope, scale and expertise - and we do.
"We have a world-class mobile network with over 2,500 base stations which are already 3G compatible. This makes implementing 3G very cost-efficient," Mr O'Sullivan said.
"As the challenger brand, Optus has a strong track record in leading with mobile innovation. We were first with WAP, first with GPRS and we are well placed to deliver Australia's first 3G network," he said.
"As the fastest growing mobile network in Australia over the last year, our focus on leading the industry with behavioural marketing has proven our capacity to win customers and keep them.
"When you combine all these factors, it puts Optus in a unique position to be able to quickly bring the benefits of 3G to Australian businesses and consumers," he said.
Optus will unveil more about its 3G plans, network and rollout in the near future.
